One of the reasons we in the US are somewhat more likely to be shot (by law enforcement officers, muggers, burglars, or just about anybody else) is our current gun laws make it unlikely we will shoot back. Most of us these days are unarmed, thus unable to defend ourselves against such attacks. We have allowed the government to take away our right to protect ourselves, even though the courts have established that the police have no responsibility to protect us.
Oh, and on terrorists: they get a lot of press, but there really aren't very many of them around. I figure my odds of being killed by a terrorist are roughly the same as of my living to be 103 and being killed by a jealous husband!
